Watts Water Softening Systems
Water softeners remove mineral ions (calcium and magnesium) that cause hardness in water. By doing so, they help overcome issues that hard water can cause, including scale buildup that reduces life of pipes and appliances; incomplete dissolving of soaps and detergents; water spots on glassware after washing; mineral deposits on bathtubs/showers; and higher energy costs for heating water. Watts offers a large selection of water softeners ranging from space-saving designs to larger commercial systems. Learn more at www.watts.com

What is Backflow and Why Should I Care?
Great support from Watts!
Got $89 part for this from amazon as I had the same problem. But after putting all the parts as shown in video, the top does not press on the spring tightly. the spring goes freely in some half inch gap. Looks right assembly till locking the spring - not sure what I am doing wrong after that.

How do you know when the valve needs to be replaced? My plumber is telling me the valve can only be adjusted when it is installed, and the whole thing needs to be replaced because the pressure at an outside hose bib is 119 psi. Thanks for any help!

Perfect video. Short explanation and right to the point!
Please address hot water tank heating. PRV set at 70psi. Expansion tank set at 78psi. Hot water tank kicks on to heat to 140F and the pressure rises to 94psi....... Me thinks these tanks are a scam......
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please visit www.watts.com/pages/contactUs.asp to contact us so that we can learn more and help.
Set it to the incoming cold water pressure. If your water pressure rises above 80 psi that needs to be corrected with the utility or your plumber. The expansion tank pressure should not be higher than the PRV setting. A standard water heater PRV shouldn't open until 150 psi so if yours is "set to 70psi" that seems wrong (is yours adjustable?).
Water pressures is 40psi can I set tank preasure to 50psi? What are the negatives?
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please visit www.watts.com/pages/contactUs.asp to contact us so that we can learn more and help.
If the tank is set to 50 psi, then the water pressure will increase to 50 psi before it starts filling the expansion tank. The negatives are you get a burst of pressure each time you open a faucet until it comes back down to 40 psi and possibly water hammer which may damage plumbing.
thank you for explaining so well
Hi, I recently had a new expansion tank installed by a local plumber and I noticed that he never bothered to check my water pressure, nor did he double check the air pressure in the tank before he installed (I was unaware of this procedure at the time). The tank says on the label the it is pre-charged at 40 psi and my water pressure is reading about 60-65 psi. Should I be concerned and do you think I should go back and try to adjust it properly now that it has already been installed? Or should I just leave it be? Thanks!!
The tank should have been pre-charged to match your water pressure prior to be connected to the piping. It can still be done. Shut off the water at the service entrance and open a cold water faucet to relieve the water pressure. With 0-PSI in the water piping pump the tank up to 60-65 PSI. Then close the faucet and open the valve at the service entrance.
Ok, Will do. Thank you!
Where would I find thus in my home please ?
The water pressure reducing valve is usually found at the water service entrance. If you’re in a moderate climate not subject to freezing sometimes they are installed in a meter box outside the house.
Watts Water Technologies when you say water service entrance do you mean stop tap? There us a stop tap near fro.t door below it has a connected nothing comes our if it (obviously) my partner is seeking more pressure from the shower upstairs (non electric) thanks for feedback mate

More bench demos. Real world is under sink. crawls space or down in a floor joist. Show that crimp tool there? Good luck.
In addition to the crimp connections we also offer the cinch clamps with the ratcheting cinch tool as well as our Quick-Connect fittings.
GREAT VIDEO PROFESSIONAL EASY TO UNDERSTAND THANKS
My valve is leaking, seems to be the same problem described in the video. I tried to open the cap by hand, but no luck. Do you see any problem to use a groove pliers? Thanks
Using pliers with large enough jaws to encompass both sides of the bonnet should not present a problem although I would recommend trying to use two hands first.
basically, tighten to raise the pressure, release to lower the pressure - of course, it will just go as high as the inlet mains...
How we get this in India?!?
Sorry for the delayed response. Please visit www.watts.com/pages/contactUs.asp to contact us so that we can learn more and help. Thank you for reaching out to us.
If the expansion tank is already installed, do I not need to make sure it's empty before adding air to increase the pressure?
If the tank is already installed you should relieve the pressure on the system side until it is down to zero-PSI before charging the tank with air. Thank you for your interest and please let us know if you have any other questions.

I just bought a tank that was precharged at 40 PSI . I read the boiler instructions and it said that the tank should be 8 to 12 PSI. I decreased to 10 psi and the the boiler pressure release valve stopped spraying water onto the floor. My suggestion is to read the instructions on the equipment that you are adding the expansion tank to; do not go by your water pressure unless it specifies.
if open system (booster pumps) the air pressure should be 0.2 or 0.3 below pump working pressure because without it everytime u open the tap pressure goes to 0 this way u let ur pump survive the short cycling which will damage the pump u simply in this video should specify and dont show a water faucet to drain water when ur talking about closed system
thats in closed system. like heating or chilled water not in booster pump open system
Sorry for the delayed response. The tank is meant to be used for thermal expansion created by heating water in a closed system. You seem to be describing the use as an accumulator tank which is not the intended application. The installation of the tank on the CW side of a water heater should not cause a booster pump to cycle. All it should do is accept the expanded volume of water created by thermal expansion and push the water back into the system when it cools down.
Can I order this kit online?
Sorry for the delayed response, but we don’t sell direct to the public.
You can order from Amazon. You may need to get the check repair kit & the vent repair kit separately as I did. You should take it apart and look at your original parts to make sure they match what you are ordering to be safe. Easy fix.
I have a water softener in my house - had it serviced by a plummer 5 months ago. Pressure has been low (on our tub and water hose in backyard). Does a water softener reduce our pressure? If so, will increasing the PRV flow help alliviate an increase flow? or will the softener always slow the pressure?
Pressure drop will always occur through a softener, how much depends on the flow rate. But, increasing pressure drop through a softener could also be a sign of chlorine damage to the actual softening resin in a system that is used on a municipal or chlorinated water supply. Chlorine will cause the media to break apart over time, basically turning it to mush, which then begins to plug the distribution system of the softener, resulting in ever increasing pressure drop. If it has been determined that is not occurring then increasing the set pressure at the reducing valve will help keeping in mind not to exceed the pressure rating of the softener.
Thanks, it seems some of the new construction to our north & south has also being a culprit. Other neighbors have had pressure issues too. Our pressure fluctuates from time-to-time. Thanks for your response,.
Does the flow have anything to do with the pressure? my kitchen faucet used to have great flow, but now it lowered considerably and I have not touched the reducing valve
Reduced volume is usually caused by a restriction. If the problem seems to be only at your kitchen faucet you might want to check the aerator to see if it’s plugged up with debris/scale. The aerator usually unscrews from the faucet spout in a counter-clockwise rotation. If the problem seems to be in the whole house most of our pressure reducing valves have integral strainers in them. Check the strainer screen to see if it’s plugged with debris.
Would this be suited for like a condo complex where each unit has a pan under the heater and their own heater? To prevent a flood to people below if a heater springs a leak due to old age?
Yes, that would be a good example of a typical application.
If I'm on a 40-60 PSI well, should I average the precharge at 50 PSI, or go with 40, or 50?
Pre-charge should be 50-PSI.
That's incorrect your air pressure should always be 2psi less than your cut on which is 40 psi if your using a 40-60- switch. Sonyour air pressure should be set at 38 psi
If your using a 30/50 pressure switch you should precharge your tank to 28psi. Always 2psi less than when your pressure switch turns the pump on
This is my situation as well, can you (Watts) speak to the comments about setting it below the cut on point?
Rick, did you go with the 50 psi and did that work for you? I'm about to install on the same setup. Thanks!
But how can I adjust my water pressure when I have one of these?
Water pressure should be adjusted at the water pressure reducing valve. With all downstream outlets closed, turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase; counter-clockwise to decrease the pressure. A pressure gauge will be needed to know where your pressure is set at.
I didn't see any arrows, does that mean the water flow direction doesn't matter?
No, the water flow does matter. The installation instructions provided with the system show the proper tubing installation for feed water, reject (drain) water and pure water.
Watts Water Technologies thank you, the system was already installedish... so I didn't have instructions.
Nice video, thank you. I'm a new homeowner and started off down this road with the question "why is my water pressure so high for a few seconds after I've taken a shower?" The answer is, I don't even *have* an expansion tank in my system. So I am going to be adding it soon, and this video was a nice informant of how to adjust the Expansion Tank pressure.
Can you use pex for an T+P valve drain extension pipe?
Sorry for the delayed response. This one fell through the cracks. To answer your question, PEX cannot be used for T&P discharge piping because it doesn’t have a high enough temperature rating.
if you loosen/ reduce the pressure to much will the bolt come out of top and water spew?
If you loosen it too much the bolt will come out, but there should not be any water behind it. We apologize for the delay in answering this question.
Very simple and accurate video. Most plumbers do not do this.
The hot water in the house is not putting out as much as the cold water. Does that have to do with the gauge?
Many times the hot water loses some pressure vs. cold water due to the restriction caused by going through the water heater. We apologize for the delay in answering this question.
Awesome !! My check spring was cracked and broken !!
Thank you for this video!
Just what I needed thanks!
thank you very much
This is great. Mine just cracked and started spewing. This looks very simple to repair. So glad this was on here
straight to the point, and simple. Thank you!
Do you install the pressure gauges on either side?
Thanks for this it was real helpful. I was not sure if you should loosen that second nut or just adjust the top!
